Abstract
Sedimentological and geochemical data provide a means of evaluating the chronological potential of a caribou bone recently found at a depth of one meter below surface near the southeastern shore of Rice Lake, Ontario. The sediment within which the bone was located is interpreted as being a lodgment till. A lodgment till is an unlikely primary depositional environment for the bone because it could not have survived intact in such severe sub-ice conditions. Furthermore, instrumental neutron-activation analyses (INAA) of trace elements in the till and sediments adhering both to the interior and exterior of the bone indicate that the bone was originally in a different sedimentological environment and that it was subsequently transported to the one meter depth, possibly by bioturbation.
