Abstract
Small flakes were scattered in quadrats on a mobile sand surface to imitate on-site flaking. During a period of strong, unidirectional wind, 39% of the flakes less than 10 millimeters in length were deflated from the quadrats in amounts related to slope and the depositional or erosional position of the quadrat. All except one of the larger stones remained in position. The archaeological implications are considered with special reference to site survey and visibility. It is suggested that assumptions based on artifact typology and human behavior from desert sites should be strongly substantiated in view of the effect of postdepositional processes.
