Abstract
The authors' reply to J.E. Rehder's challenge to their methodology (in the same issue, p. 351-353) in the analysis of african iron smelting in prehistory. They maintain that modern furnaces cannot be used a a model for understanding early furnaces, and present new calculations to reinforce their conclusion that African iron smelters understood the principle of preheating.
