Abstract
The Advisory Committee on Preservation was established in 1979 as a response to both exaggerated and realistic reports presented to congressional committees and to the public on the deterioration of archival records. This article provides an extensive survey of the structure of the Committee and of its first decade of activities. The main tasks of the Committee are to promote research and to give advice to the Archivist of the United States based on research findings.
