Abstract
Since its establishment in 2003, the Users’ Group for Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography (MaSC) has grown as an international forum for interaction and discussion among scientists using chromatographic and mass spectrometric applications in conservation and preservation studies. Recent activities of MaSC have been focussed in three areas. Firstly, in keeping with MaSC’s mandate of holding regular discussion meetings with associated workshops on chromatography and mass spectrometry methods, a well attended meeting was held in September 2007 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA). The associated workshop presentations, held in the laboratories of the PMA, Winterthur Museum and Agilent Technologies, and conducted by invited scientists from three internationally recognized cultural heritage laboratories – those of the University of Pisa, the Doerner Institute, and the Getty Conservation Institute – provided participants with a unique opportunity to compare different approaches to the challenges of organic analysis of artistic and historic artifacts using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Secondly, a system for submission and redistribution of mass spectra and spectral databases relevant to the study of artistic and cultural objects is being refined. The group is developing a fully automated system, which will allow NIST formatted libraries to be compiled and redistributed to members. Finally, MaSC became a legally incorporated body at the end of 2007. The new legal status will facilitate the development of the Group, conferring advantages such as allowing applications for funding and for organizations to support MaSC financially. Further information on the activities of the Group can be found at www.mascgroup.org.
