Ceramic seals and roller stamps have a spatial distribution from the Central Mexican Area through Andean region, and a chronological range from the Formative horizons through the Contact period. They often demonstrate considerable aesthetic sophistication. Ceramic seals and roller stamps are secondary to other mediums, in a relationship similar to a negative to a photograph, or a plate to an etching. A primary focus of this chapter is to explore just what these stamps and seals were used for, and to determine to what medium they were applied. The analysis also examines the design motifs portrayed on these artifacts, and explores questions of symbolic content of the designs. However, it is generally not known exactly to what ends prehistoric Americans put the seals and roller stamps.
