Analysis of the chemical composition and reactivity of the wool epicuticle by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is presented. Approximate relative proportions of protein and lipid were deduced from surface element ratios. Changes following treatment with potassium t-butoxide in anhydrous butanol were also investigated. -- AATA
