An amber-colored bowl generally believed to be late Hellenistic or early Roman in date had been in the Ashmolean for 100 years. Analysis by atomic absorption and emission spectrography show that the bowl is a modern object which could not have been made in antiquity. Its composition is different from that of any known ancient glass, and the lack of impurities indicates that it was quite probably made from laboratory chemicals. -- AATA
