Abstract
The judgment of the prospective weathering behavior of stone having a sedimentary origin still presents difficulties, particularly, because extent and ranking order of material characteristics responsible are almost incomprehensible. Effective are also different exposure conditions caused by the local situation in the building. In some cases the development of new methods was previously necessary in order to offer a suitable selection of test techniques. By means of diagrams selected, assessment possibilities and their limits are pointed out and the factors discussed which are of influence on the measured values. Since the corresponding processes can only be comprehended with difficulty, an attempt to formulate a general approach to the weathering behavior seems to be useful. One may arrive at such a model experimentally by means of methods the results of which take into account the main kinds of stress and are independent from material processing artifacts and geometrical circumstances at the building. Of particular importance is the application of the sodium sulfate crystallization test which permits direct access to the weathering process. Several characteristics related to pore space, mechanical strength, and to the connections between them seem to be useful. Preliminary results have encouraged the work to proceed in the present direction in order to establish finally an objective basis for a relative judgment regarding the various types of building stone.
