Abstract
Discusses methods of description of the condition of artifacts and registration, with a cost analysis of the description process. A detailed and sound description and/or assessment of condition is a necessary basis for efficient conservation management. After a short overview and evaluation of the registration forms that have been used in the Netherlands in the last 15 years, the conclusion is that standards for description of the condition of artifacts are necessary. From the analysis of conservation activities as a consequence of the condition of an object, parameters are formulated which should be registered on conservation cards. It should first be determined whether the condition of an object is stable or unstable. Estimates should be made for unstable objects on how much time should be spent on immediate treatment or first aid, preventive or active conservation, research, and environmental control. For stable objects, the activities depend on whether the object should be made presentable, accessible, exhibitable, and/or transportable. The techniques and materials of the object should also be summarily registered in the field. If these data are stored in an information system, the conservator has an instrument at his disposal that enables him to pursue efficient conservation management.
