Restoration of a medieval cross of Italian origin from the 14th century is discussed in detail. The cross offered more problems for conservation than expected. The composite object was cleaned in a disassembled state which revealed fire gilding with silver on the copper plate from both (outer and interior) sides of the plate decorated with figures. The supporting metal itself is a composite matter: alloy of copper and zinc, applied on a limewood core. Restoration of the object is in progress.
