Abstract
A brief histroy of indigo dye is presented. Production, processing, and the use of the natural dye is traced from the ancient to the modern world. Chemical developments during the 19th and early 20th centuries that led to the commercial production of synthetic indigo dyes are discussed. Reasons are given for the continued use and importance of indigo as a dye for natural fibers.
