In the 15th and 16th centuries, Flemish frames and supports were essentially functional. They were conceived and built by cabinet makers, carpenters, sculptors, chest makers, sometimes even wood turners. Oak wood was sawed and joined in such a way as to limit free play. The methods of assembling the boards, the frame, and of attaching the panel to the frame were varied and testify to a long tradition and careful work. The purpose of the work, be it destined for a home or altar retable, to hung up or to stand, explains certain peculiarities of construction. Another factor was the concern the cabinet makers had about the efficiency and rapidity of their work. Evolution in taste resulted in evolution in frame and form making.
