A consideration of how paleolithic stone tools are designed to perform their intended functions leads to an understanding of how paleolithic people coped with the strength of the materials on which they were using the tools, with biomechanics, the scale effect and so forth. The tools themselves rarely failed in use. The features of design and manufacture in relation to performance of tools suggest that paleolithic people had a sophisticated understanding of the various relevant mechanical factors. -- AATA
