The ninth century Temple of Borobudur, in central Java, has been undergoing preservation for the past 12 years, funded by UNESCO. The entire temple is being stabilized by slabs of reinforced concrete under the main structures. Another major problem is the bacterial growth on the extremely porous building stones, due to a combination of high humidity and abundance of lichen, fungi and mosses living on the stones. Spraying the stones with chemicals such as anthocyanins has had an inhibiting effect on the fungi, but the processes must be continually maintained to be permanently successful. -- AATA
