Abstract
On the basis of published analyses of ceramic glazes the development of glazing recipes is described. The three principal types of glazes -- alkali glaze, lead glaze and lime glaze -- are used in very early periods of history. Local conditions and the improvement of techniques lead to a certain modification of these types. Until the 19th century new techniques were based on old traditions. During the 19th century, when raw materials were replaced by synthetic chemicals, new recipes were extensively used by the potter.
