The ceramic ware of the Jomon period is compared with Kayoi ware. In the middle of the 5th century, new techniques, e.g., the potter's wheel and reduction firing in a covered kiln, were introduced from Korea. Selected pieces from the Avery Brundage Collection are discussed from the perspective of their mode of manufacture. The technique of Mokuhitsu Kasen or Wooden Brush Kasen is explained. -- AATA
