Abstract
Fireplaces surrounded by tin-glazed earthenware tiles were common in 18th century houses of the well-to-do in the U.S. There is no evidence of domestic production of this pottery; tiles were imported primarily from Holland and England. Characteristic styles and techniques of manufacturers (i.e., John Sadler and Guy Green) are identified. -- AATA
