Abstract
A literature survey on buffers. Methods of evaluating text and paper stability against water and water treatments are described. The combinations of buffers with sizing are identified. Three buffers are recommended: borate, Barrow's buffer and chalk suspension. Treating documents with buffers to protect against water instability is described. -- AATA
