Abstract
Fragments of molds, cores, tuyeres, and crucibles, together with associated slag remains, recovered from the workshop of Pheidias at Olympia, Greece, were studied using elemental analysis and microscopy of cross-sections. The analytical technique was wavelength-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Local clays were used, but the molds, tuyeres, and crucibles were made with care, being built up in layers with thorough sequential drying, and incorporated hair to improve the porosity. Tuyeres and crucibles were used without prior firing, and melting was done in the open crucible, a mixture of copper and charcoal being placed inside and heating accomplished using knee-shaped tuyeres above.
