Abstract
Artificial, or radiation induced, thermoluminescence of limestone and dolomite host rock for galena and sphalerite deposits has been studied using recently developed equipment for measuring simultaneously the luminescent emission intensity and wavelength as a function of sample temperature. The localities investigated include Toggenburg, Otavi Mountains, South West Africa; Charcas, State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico; and Bisbee, Arizona, U.S.A. To determine whether the artificial thermoluminescence of the host rock might be useful for mineral exploration, measurements were made on numerous samples obtained at various distances from known lead-zinc ore (mineralization) bodies. These results and those from a parallel study, using similar technique but samples from a different suite of deposits, indicate that it is highly probably that artificial thermoluminescence measurements can be developed into a useful new technique for locating lead-zinc deposits in limestone and dolomite host rocks.
