Abstract
In order to settle accurately provenance of stone artifacts of sanukite, composition of minor elements in sanukite stone from mines and in stone artifacts of sanukite was measured by means of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Sanukite stones were obtained from mines distributed in western part of Japan : Umanoyama Tottori Pref., Saragamine and Tuzuragawa-Nakaidani Ehime Pref., Shodoshima-Otozan and Tejima-Danzan Kagawa Pref., Yayama Oita Pref., Ogushi Nagasaki Pref., Nishiyama and Kokubunjicho Kagawa Pref. and Nijosan Nara Pref.. Concentrations of K, Ca and Ti were obtained from the fluorescence spectra using the <sup>55</sup>Fe source and those of Mn, Rb, Sr and Zr were obtained by using the <sup>109</sup>Cd source. Furthermore, samples of the various geological sites seem to show their individual patterns in the composition of these elements. This lead to a hopeful conclusion we can settle strictly the provenance of sanukite stone artifacts by means of X-ray fluorescence analysis. Five samples of sanukite stone artifact excavated from an archaeological site at Ikegami in Osaka were ground into powder and were analyzed in the same manner as above. The result indicated that all of them belong to Nijosan group. These samples were dated to be pre-middle Yayoi or a little later (B.P. 2100). Non-destructive analysis was tried on ten stone artifacts from Ikegami.
