This paper summarizes several points regarding pottery standards which emerged from meetings held at Brookhaven National Laboratory and in Bonn during 1978. The existing standard pottery of Perlman and Asaro and the USGS rocks were disappearing, so new standards in bulk amounts were needed. One desirable feature stressed above all was the need to compare like with like, i.e., to use a standard clay for comparison with pottery. A table lists ideal specifications of a standard reference in terms of absolute concentrations of various elements.
