Abstract
Neutron activation analysis has two primary advantages as a routine laboratory tool: it can be very accurate to single elements at extremely low concentrations and it can often provide a good deal of information on many elements in a single sample. Extremely low concentrations of chromium in blood serum samples have been determined by neutron activation analysis using irradiations of four days at the University of Missouri Research Reactor. Most often the advantages of neutron activation over other characterization techniques are most evident when it is employed as a multi-element survey technique, as a purely instrumental approach. The cost per element is below other techniques in this approach. This paper describes quantitative multi-element survey techniques for a variety of bioenvironmental samples.
