Abstract
This study was designed to determine the feasibility of treating log-home logs with water-dispersible zinc naphthenate (ZWD). Variables included: 1) species (southern pine, lodgepole pine), 2) conditioning method (kiln-drying, high-temperature drying, steam-conditioning), 3) pressure process (empty-cell, full-cell), and 4) treating solution temperature (ambient, 180 ° F). The ZWD emulsion proved very stable under all treating conditions and was compatible with existing treating plant equipment. Southern pine was more easily treated than lodgepole pine. The gross injection was greater for logs treated by the full-cell process, but gradients for both empty-cell and full-cell treated stock were essentially the same shape. The feasibility of treating green stock by steam conditioning first was demonstrated. Heating the treating solution did not significantly improve treatment. -- AATA
