Abstract
We show that a californium 252 neutron source permits a quick and non destructive determination of three important elements of a coin's composition, viz. gold, silver and copper. Using this technique of activation analysis, we studied more than two hundred Constantinian coins. For the period A.D. 313-40, we followed the evolution of the silver concentration in these coins coming from different mints of the Roman Empire. A numismatic interpretation is also given.
