Abstract
General developments in the fields of dyes (including mauve, diazo dyes, alizarin dyes, rhodamine dyes and synthetic indigo) and plastics (cellulose nitrate, phenolic resins and alkyds), mainly in the second half of the 19th century, are described, together with the discovery of solvents for cellulose nitrate for lacquers and paints. Lithopone was introduced as a white pigment.
