Abstract
Two hundred and thirty eight coins belonging to 15 Bahmani kings of the Deccan who reigned for 179 years were analysed. Copper is the major metal. In some of the coins of early periods of the dynasty Sn and Pb are found to be major constituents showing that they were acquainted with the use of ternary alloy mixture. The addition of tin was discontinued from the middle of the Bahmani period. Trace metals found in the coins are nickel, zinc, gold, silver, arsenic, bismuth, iron, cobalt and antimony. Analysis of coins can aid in their conservation.
