Macedonian artifacts from the 4th century B.C. document a change in art technology. Under Philip, artisans from Ionia and southern Greece designed metal objects for utilitarian uses, adornment, and worship. Marble replaced wood, rough stone, and mud-brick in architectural use. Relief ware and metal -- gilded, incised, and embossed -- displaced vase painting as a major art form. Three-dimensional jewelry was made of colored stones or glass paste or a combination of two valuable metals. Exhibition items were recovered from graves in Macedonia, Thessaly, and Thrace. -- AATA
