Abstract
The article proposes that aluminum and its alloys can be protected from corrosion by means of anodic oxidation. The electrode potential of aluminum and its chemical reactivity suggests it should corrode easily. That this is not the case is due to the formation of a thin film of aluminum oxide or hydroxide. This natural corrosion resistance suggests that a thick, strongly adherent film of oxide or hydroxide would provide even greater protection against corrosion. The process of anodic oxidation involves immersing the aluminum in a chromic acid bath along with a carbon rod, then sending a current through the bath, making the aluminum the anode and the carbon rod the cathode. After awhile, the aluminum becomes coated with a semi-opaque gray film. The article describes a number of experiments with different baths, different voltages, different alloys of aluminum, etc. The tensile strength of aluminum was not affected by the treatment, although bending tests showed marked differences. The primary suggested application is to aluminum and aluminum alloy aircraft parts.
