Abstract
Lightfastness testing of 25 permanent pens was carried out; four were red, three blue, and the rest black ink. Staff prepared three samples of each pen ink on a strip chart recorder and a sine wave generator to give pen oscillations. The samples were then exposed to light for approximately 500 hours in an apparatus described in A.S. 2001.4.21. Of the 25 pens tested, only 6 showed little or no change in color and were, in addition, highly resistant to water solubility. These were Artline 700, Nikkoname permanent no. 150, Finepoint System 0.2, Artline 250, Artline Drawing System 0.6, and Pigma 05. All of these pens were black, and although the majority of pens tested were black, the results confirmed the fact that black pens have better colorfastness than most colored pens.
