A history of Hayle Paper Mill and the handmade papers it produced is illustrated with samples and documents from the Mill archives. Discusses the reasons for the closure of Hayle mill in 1987. An early mention of the need for paers of conservation quality is dated 1786. The main uses of their paper was for ledgers, share certificates, and currency. References to early problems with quality and attempts to produce conservation papers date from 1856. The origins of papers, such as Cockerell, Bodleian, Dover, Dover Castle, Edinburgh, Falkiner, Renaissance I-IV, and the input of conservators in their development are highlighted. Techniques for sizing, using gelatine and Aquapel, and the search for new fibers, particularly good linen, are also mentioned.
