Abstract
Growing concern in Britain in 1983 regarding the effectiveness of current fumigation techniques on fungal organisms prompted a survey of British archive repositories. The test presents results of the survey and studies the methods currently in use in Britain, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, the United States, and Spain. Thymol concentrations and microbiological screening using microorganisms are discussed. Alternatives to thymol-ethylene oxide, ethylene oxide/carbon dioxide, ethylene oxide/methyl bromide, gamma irradiation, commercial spray disinfectant (not identified), together with the associated safety hazards are included. Testing on calf bindings suffering from fungal attack detected the presence of quinone. Tests to isolate and purify proteolytic enzymes in microorganisms enabled the study of their reactions to various substances in the surface layer of the calf leather. Enzyme inhibitors, including quinone compounds, were studied. 2-methyl-1, 4-naphthaquinone mixed with 5-hydroxy-1, 4-napthaquinone in alcohol or water, or vitamin K3 in powder form are recommended as enzyme inhibitors. Japanese containers made from kiri wood protect scrolls against heat, water vapor, eliminating the use of fumigants. Nikka pellets also act as a humidity controlling agent. Protective barrier of biaxially orientated polyvinylalcohol film (BO-PVA) made from polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol, polypropylene and humidity buffering paper have been developed in Japan.
