A large pastel on canvas of Marie Antoinette by Vigée-Lebrun was treated to remove severe distortions. Limitations in handling the delicate surface of the pastel required an interdisciplinary approach involving techniques used in paintings and paper conservation. Mounting onto an oversize strainer using Pellon applied to the tacking edges with a heat-seal adhesive (not described) was carried out prior to humidification on a cold-lining suction table. The Dutch method of applying strips of Kraft or cartridge paper to the edges of the pastel with wheat starch paste, while it was still attached to the stretcher with Pellon, was also tried. Damp felt was applied to the verso to prevent drying out. Much of the cockling was pulled out by these two methods. The remaining distortions were removed by attaching <i>Okawara</i> (machine-made Japanese paper) to the reverse of the canvas and the strainer by spray moistening and wheat starch paste. After distortions were removed the <i>Okawara</i> was allowed to remain as a lining support for the pastel.
