Abstract
The application of a facing to fragile works of art on paper prior to their dismounting from acidic supports is discussed. The use of consolidants such as gelatin, Funori, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, or Ethulose (ethylhydroxyethylcellulose), and a facing tissue of Tengujo or L Tissue is recommended. The various treatment proceduresmsurface cleaning, selecting materials, consolidation, attachment of the facing, application of backings, and removal of facingmtogether with matting and reapplication in the original board format are all explained. The author cautions that this method is not appropriate for works such as pastels. Involvement of the curator is also advised.
