Abstract
Stanley Robertson, frame conservator at the National Gallery, spoke about the history of frames on December 6 in the Hirshhorn auditorium. He discused the development of frame styles in Italy, France, England, the Netherlands, and Spain. He also traced the appearance and developmnent of the acanthus leaf motif in European frames and discussed the popularity of other plant forms in frame ornamentation. Responding to a question about the extent to which regilding is appropriate, he said that his traditional apprenticeship taught him to respect the original gilding remaining. He advised those interested to purchase The Book Of Picture Frames by Dr. Grimm, available in German and English (German preferred).
