Extensive restoration can create scientific confusion for future scholars, especially in the absence of close collaboration between curator and conservator. Several examples of the restoration of objects with deceptive results are presented. Within collections, and in published articles, restored artifacts should always be so identified. Scholars should bear in mind that an artifact may have been altered since leaving its culture of origin, and no record of the work done may exist. See AATA 19-769.
