The article begins with a brief review of the artistic use of color in the 19th and 20th centuries based on concurrent scientific theory. This is followed by a discussion of color in regard to three psychophysical variables -- luminance, dominant wave length, and colormetric purity. Examples of author's artwork are used to explain these color phenomena. -- AATA
