The technique of paper splitting as a conservation procedure developed in Leipzig (see also AATA 25-1687), is clarified in answer to questions about its reversibility and aging stability. The process involves coating the paper with gelatin glue on both sides, applying a backing and a facing, a short drying time, and an even splitting of the original in two halves which are subsequently glued onto another stabilizer carrier material. The adhesive used is a mixture of carboxymethylcellulose and acrylate. An alkaline buffer can be added as well as a fungicide. An aqueous enzymatic treatment insures reversibility, and subsequent standard treatments in aqueous systems, such as washing, deacidification, bleaching, or disinfection are not affected. Other questions are discussed: preservation of information, long-term stability, increase in paper thickness are the main ones.
