Abstract
The natural cycle of life and death, so prominently exemplified on even the earliest Precolumbian art, was a major subject in the art of Costa Rica. The symbols describing the cycle both in natural and human terms appear inscribed or carved on the articles accompanying the dead in their tombs. The interpretation of some of those symbols is the focus of this chapter.
