Abstract
Photographic examination of documents under ultraviolet radiation extends the capability to identify erasures, substitutions, or other falsifications provided by direct examination under UV light. Two processes of UV photography are discussed, the reflected and fluorescence methods. In the fluorescence method, the UV radiation is filtered out and the fluorescing, visible rays are allowed to enter the lens. In the reflected method, the UV rays are recorded as a selective, resolving illuminant on the photographic emulsion. This view of the document may bring out many kinds of hidden evidence. Several specific uses for the reflected technique are discussed. In addition, the lighting and filters to use in both types of UV photography are discussed. Use of integral tripack films for natural color photography has the valuable function of producing three individual sensitized emulsions with different ranges of color sensitivity record emissions that are, in some cases, too weak to be seen. Finally, chemical reagents may be used to induce fluorescence in a substance that does not otherwise respond to UV radiation.
