Abstract
Slush casting is used extensively in the manufacture of various ornamental objects. For good results, it is necessary to use a metal which will give castings entirely free from cracks or flaws. The goals of lightness of casting (for economy), minimization of losses from oxidation, and production of a large proportion of perfect castings are to some extent mutually interfering. Impurities in the spelter include cadmium, lead, iron, and arsenic. These impurities impart distinct properties to the resulting alloys. Experiments with lead, arsenic, iron, and aluminum-zinc alloys are described, and it is concluded that alloys of 5 percent to 5.5 percent aluminum possesses great possibilities because of its lightness, smoothness, and general adaptability to the purpose of slush casting.
