This paper concerns packing of furniture for transport, with particular reference to the importance of controlling relative humidity. Abrupt changes in relative humidity can cause cracking or other damage. To avoid such damage, furniture should be packed in a series of layers, including tissue paper around the object, followed by absorbent material, the a layer of polyethylene sheeting, then aluminum foil, then shock-absorbing material. More sophisticated techniques include using silica gel or wood shavings to provide moisture ballast. Unpacking the object in its new location is also important; any piece should be allowed to adjust as slowly as possible to the new environment.
