Wooden objects are generally composites made up of at least three materials, wood, adhesives, and coatings. Each material presents characteristic deterioration problems. Successful conservation treatment of a wooden object requires an interactive approach to all of the materials of which it is made. This monograph is a guide to such an interactive approach. It begins with a description of the materials generally encountered (wood, adhesives, coatings, and associated materials), then goes on to methods of furniture and wooden object construction (Chapter II). Chapter III deals with deterioration of the materials used in furniture. Chapter IV is a guide to conservation treatment. Conservation ethics, goals of treatment, evaluation of treatment options, routine care and maintenance, and how to select a conservator are among the topics considered. A furniture conservation bibliography (Chapter V) is also provided.
