Abstract
The ease and availability of x-radiographic imaging allows determination of the details of fabrication of large quantities of sherds and whole pottery vessels to become a routine addition to the data used to solve archaeological questions. However, the bulk of archaeological reports show images of ceramics confined to only drawings and photographs; radiographic images are limited to a rare appendix and some specialized articles. In nine examples we review the craft of x-radiographic imaging of ceramics and compare the characteristics of four different sensors: high-resolution x-ray film, electrostatic plates (xeroradiography), photostimulable phosphors and computer-aided tomography (CT-scan). A summary is given of problems for studies of fabrication with alternate imaging techniques, such as ultrasound and dye penetrants, scanning electron microscopy, texture studies using x-ray diffraction and petrographic thin section. Some effects on image content and quality of parameters, such as the experimental limit of detectable density gradients and exposure and power requirements (called technique by medical radiologists), are shown. The problem of acquiring publishable images is addressed in three ways: one high-tech solution is high-resolution digital image processing, and two other low-tech solutions are multiple photographic prints from a single x-ray image and retaking the image to optimize certain structural features. Examples include a Near Eastern Pre-pottery Neolithic plaster from Abu Hureyra, Syria, Neolithic earthenware storage jar from Hajji Firuz, Iran, an Achaeminid gazelle rhyton probably from the Near East, a Minton copy of a St. Porchaire or Henry II candlestick as well as contemporary earthenware and stoneware from Pakistan, France and Japan which were used as standards.
