SARCAR (Smithsonian Archaeometric Research Collections and Records) is the Smithsonian Institution's archive of analyses carried out on archaeological artifacts. It is housed in the Smithsonian's Conservation Analytical Laboratory (CAL). Along with the analytical data, records are kept of the descriptive information pertaining to the artifacts (donor institution, provenience, type, style, etc.). In some cases, the artifacts themselves, material sampled from them, photographs of them, and/or drawings of them are also housed in the SARCAR facility. Typically, however, the data consist of analytical measurements and written descriptions. In order to provide for the long-term maintenance and availability of these data, a computerized database has been developed. The SARCAR database resides at CAL on a network fileserver also known as SARCAR. It is accessible through any one of the 30+ microcomputers attached to the CAL local area network. Along with the database itself, a number of the statistical programs, developed both at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and at CAL are available through the SARCAR server. The present document contains instructions on inputting and retrieving data from the SARCAR database and on the use of the available statistical programs.
