Abstract
Animal glues are all collagen based and are derived from boiling hide and bone. They are one of the common types of adhesives used today. The ability of animal glue to perform as an adhesive is derived from the strength and polarity of the collagen molecule. Good adhesion is the result of several kinds of chemical and intermolecular forces coming into play between the adhesive and substrate. These different types of forces are described. Animal glue even from a single source may vary in composition and properties depending on the processing methods used on the raw materials. These processing methods are briefly considered. The adhesive properties of animal glues are also described in terms of their chemical make up. Since animal glues are made of degraded collagen they are susceptible to degradation processes similar to that of skin and bone. Some of these processes are briefly mentioned. Other adhesives namely fish glue, casein, and albumin are also reviewed.
