Abstract
Conservation techniques used in conjunction with excavation of an 18th century well at the Fort Loudoun Site (36FR107) in Pennsylvania. Waterlogged artifacts recovered included objects made of leather, bone, fabric, wood and ferrous metal. Conservation efforts began at the time of excavation with emphasis on keeping the objects submerged in improvised field tanks filled with water which has been treated with a fungicide, Mystox LPL 40 E (40% penta chlorophenyl laurate) until the objects could be transported to a conservation laboratory for treatment. The report focuses on leather artifacts and describes the nature of leather, conservation methodology and results using aqueous solutions of Carbowax 750, a methoxy poly(ethylene glycol), and with Bavon ASAK-ABP.
