The paper is a record of the work on the storage of the archaeological and ethnographiccollections of the Guatemalan National Museum carried out by the author in 1949 when Guatemalan material from the Carnegie Institute, Washington, was added to the collections. The stores are designed to be self-explanatory, due to their arrangement, even in the absence of qualified staff. Material is sorted into whole and fragmentary objects, subject matter, cultural area, site and chronology and accuracy of information available. Each object is recorded in a file card system indicating its exact provenance, association, date and conditions of discovery. A museum directory, cross-indexed with the card file, simplifies object location. All drawers, etc. are numbered and color-tagged. The arrangement of the stores gives the student immediate indication of origin, age and relative scientific value of the collection. Examples are given. The hope is expressed that this type of system be copied to aid theoretical archaeologists and ethnologists. -- AATA
