While some work was done in silver, granulation on jewelry was usually done with gold, generally a silver-rich gold on a copper-rich gold substrate. Size of the granules ranged from 2 down to 0.14 mm in diameter. Thousands of granules were used, even on simple items. The four types of work are: separate or point granulation; linear granulation where the grains are formed into lines: massed or field granulation where the grains are laid out in sheets, and cluster or grape-like granulation where the grains are piled or stacked up to form a shape.
